Simple Kung Pao Chicken +Gluten-Free +Grilled Chicken
What is kung pao chicken?
Kung Pao Chicken is a classic Stir-Fried Chicken dish from the Sichuan province of south western China. The traditional recipe uses Sichuan peppercorns and hoisin sauce. If you don’t have access to these ingredients, don’t worry you’ll still be able to enjoy this dish using the following substitutes. Sichuan peppercorns can be substituted with black peppercorn and coriander seeds. Hoisin sauce can be easily substituted with Oyster sauce to get the same delectable taste.
Is Kung pao Chicken Gluten-free?
When eating out at a restaurant, this dish is NOT Gluten-Free unless specifically mentioned. Here are the ingredients that you need to check. The sauces, soy sauce, oyster sauce widely used contain gluten. The restaurant staff sometimes may not be aware of these details. Also, vinegar used also may contain gluten. Gluten-free versions are typically pricier and hence not the most obvious choice for commercial operators.
Traditionally, Kung Pao chicken is made with stir fried chicken. The batter may contain gluten. This recipe uses Grilled Chicken.

Ingredients
- 1½ lbs Grilled Chicken
- 2 tbsp Sesame Oil
- 2 tbsp Roasted unsalted nuts Gluten-free
Kung Pao Sauce
- 1 tbsp Oyster Sauce Vegan, Gluten-Free
- ½ tbsp Rice Vinegar Gluten-Free
- 1 tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 tsp Brown Sugar
- 4 tbsp Water
- 3/4 tsp Black Pepper Powder
- 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
Vegetables
- 2 Long Chilli Peppers
- 4 Spring Onion stems
- 1 Green Bell Pepper
- 2-3 Green Chillies
- 5-6 Garlic Cloves
- ½ Red Onion
Instructions
Chicken Prep
- Refer to the Insanely Good Grilled Chicken Recipe on this site to prepare the grilled chicken. Chop the grilled chicken into small cubes.
Vegetable Prep
- Wash the vegetables, finely chop green chillies and garlic
- Finely chop the white portion of the spring onions. Dice bell peppers and long chilli peppers
Kung Pao Sauce
- In a small bowl, stir together Oyster sauce, water, soy sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, black pepper and coriander powder. Mix well.
Cooking Steps
- In a wok on medium heat, add sesame oil, when the oil is warm add in chopped green chillies, and garlic. Stir fry for 30 seconds. Add in chopped onions, spring onion and saute for 2 minutes.
- When the onion turns soft, add in the chopped chicken, vegetables and kung pao sauce. Stir in the unsalted nuts.
- Saute for 2 minutes and turn off heat.
- Garnish with chopped spring onions. Enjoy this delicious recipe with steamed rice, or noodles.
